BUTTERFLY DESIGN
The idea of the butterfly was brought to our attention by the
Late Margaret Hewer. The butterfly represents the messenger
of the departed souls. It is also said to be a symbol of the traveling
Spirits, those departed and misplaced that are wandering about.
The design was created by the Late Brad Collinson and adopted
by our committee as our logo.

OAKLAND MUSEUM OF CALIFORNIA
In September 2002, a small Haida delegation repatriated a single ancestor from the Oakland Museum of California. This ancestor was removed from Haida Gwaii in the 1940’s. The Oakland Museum also had another Haida ancestor, who originated from Alaska. This second ancestor will be addressed by the Kaigani Haida through NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act). This museum actually offered to return our ancestors, instead of us having to negotiate with them, which we really appreciated. This repatriation was the first cross-border repatriation of a Haida ancestor.

The Oakland Museum of California has approximately seventy pieces attributed to the Haida. We did not have time to view these pieces, but do have a catalog describing them.
